Implementation of Air Quality and Emission Policy in Ghana: In March 2011, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology received Cabinet approval for a memorandum on Air Quality and Emission Policy. As part of identification of strategies to implement the Policy, the Ministry organized a workshop to engage various stakeholders including the Business Community. A private entity has been identified to collaborate with the Ministry and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to integrate emission testing into road worthiness certification for vehicles. The implementation of this policy has the potential of reducing short-lived climate pollutants including black carbon and consequently, offsetting environmental and economic burdens imposed on Ghana through regulation of emissions from over-aged vehicles.
Landfill Gas Capture and Processing in Ghana: Landfills and waste dumps all over the world emit methane, one of the short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs). Since 2010, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology has been collaborating EnD-I Ag, a private company based in Halle (Saale), Germany, to undertake feasibility studies of waste dumps and landfills in Ghana to identify the potential of capturing and utilizing landfill gas (methane) for electricity production and consequently offsetting the adverse impacts of landfill gases on climate change. As a first step in the implementation of this project, the Ministry is soliciting support to establish a pilot landfill gas capture and processing plant. This pilot project will be used to raise awareness on the potential of landfill gas as a source of energy and to build local capacity towards integrated management of solid and liquid waste in Ghana.
Control of Black Carbon Emission from Wildfires Associated with Agricultural Production: Under the Ghana Environmental Management Project which is being supported by the government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency, the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency has been raising awareness on the adverse impacts of the use of wild fire in agricultural practices especially in the northern part of the country and consequently reduce the emission of black carbon associated with wildfires.
Regional Workshop on SLCPs: The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology collaborated with the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Africa Climate Policy Centre to organize a workshop on SLCPs in Accra, Ghana, in September. The workshop was sponsored by the members of CCAC aimed at raising awareness on SLCPs among participating countries and enhancing the capacity of policy makers to take effective actions at national and regional levels to reduce the emission of SLCPs and their adverse impacts on health and food security on the African Continent.
Collaboration with Global Research Alliance to raise awareness on CCAC: The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology under the auspicies of the Global Research Alliance hosted a regional workshop in November 2012, in Accra, Ghana on building capability in measurement, inventory and mitigation of greenhouse gases for African farming systems. The Alliance is focused on researching on agricultural technologies that have the potential for reducing methane emission from livestock and agricultural production. The workshop provided a platform for raising awareness on the activities of the CCAC.
