The Republic of Maldives, a partner in the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, faces an enormous challenge to cope with climate change impacts. The Government is responding with equally large actions to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants, which have a significant impact on the population of the Maldives, and to contribute to regional and global mitigation targets for climate change.
A clear example is the strong commitment to switch to low GWP alternatives while phasing out HCFCs, joining Federated States of Micronesia as a co-sponsor of a proposal for amendment of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer to phase down the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and contribute to the broader understanding of SLCPs through scientific research conducted at the Maldives Climate Observatory- Hanimaadhoo. In addition to this, work is in progress to conduct a feasibility study for replacing the existing population of HCFC/HFC based air-conditioners in Malé, Maldives, with a not-in-kind technology, featuring zero ODP, extremely low GWP alternatives and energy efficient alternatives through CCAC funding.
